Christantus Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though embarking on their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their upcoming fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal straight entry to the last 16, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg problems.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
