Delhi Rises to Dangerous Smog After Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" level.
Extremely High Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy level set by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above safe standards.
Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Changes
Since 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly haze that covers the metropolis as winter approaches.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the current city government appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "tradition and environment".
Legal Decision and Reality
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be used during designated periods throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener type.
Many monitoring devices throughout the capital registered contamination reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Consequences
The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also sparked a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming worsening pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from across the border following the celebrations.
Chronic Pollution Problem
Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
During the festival period, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Various Contamination Factors
The situation in Delhi is resulting from a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
In these regions, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the city as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to various research.
The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
