EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
