Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
