The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be permitted to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
