The Citizens Three Goals to Nil The Red Devils: Lauren Hemp scores in Manchester City comfortable victory.

Similar to bad weather swept through the north-west the night before, City blew Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 victory for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their title credentials as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for Manchester United

This outcome marked back-to-back WSL losses for the United manager's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a significant margin off the table toppers with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capacity to juggle domestic and continental football with a thin team has been a frequently analyzed issue since they secured entry to the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the away side, they seemed weary from start to finish, the historic win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the dropping of the on-form Melvine Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar loading concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to gather for Skinner and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the strength from Manchester City whose potent attack played with and dismantled the opposition with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts completely dominant and saw the visitors all at sea. Before this fixture, United had conceded just few in this league campaign but they disintegrated in the wake of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came soon when Miedema used her strength to bundle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot wide. Hemp was at the core of everything in the beginning, using the gap left by Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of attacks ahead, their direct style giving them alternatives in the wings but they could not challenge Yamashita. City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their rivals and trying to pull them out of their organization.

Goals Galore

They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.

They extended their advantage with an additional two goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was able to drive through the center from the back, the field became spacious for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij received possession on the wing before providing a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp allowed the opportunity to drive a attempt home from distance.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Former City player Park came nearest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to record a solitary shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a superb Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. After failing to beat any team who placed above them in the prior term, City's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding position after nine matches.
